2.STUDENT DALE RESPOND-As the working with Joe and his family, it would be my responsibility to ensure Joe is living in a healthy and functional environment. Considering Joe has both a mother and father in the home, as well as a sibling, the goal of the assessment would be to determine if Joe’s relationship with everyone is healthy. Joe’s mother appeared to suffer from depression throughout the extent of the movie. Joe’s mother was also the victim of abuse from Joe’s father which led to her lack of involvement in Joe and his brother’s lives. Since Joe’s mother was absent and Joe’s father was abusive to his mother, Joe would often get himself into trouble due to the lack of guidance.Joe’s father appeared to suffer from alcoholism throughout the extent of the movie. Since Joe’s father was inebriated most of the time, he lacked a sense of reality beyond a drunken state. Joe’s father’s presence put every family member on edge. Joe’s father made home life stressful for everyone. This type of stress puts strain on other aspects. Joe’s father’s type of abuse could be seen as negative reinforcement through operant conditioning. (Landahl & Hull, 2014) Living in high-stress environments can be detrimental to development.Joe’s brother felt the stresses of home life as Joe did. Considering both Joe and Joe’s brother worked, there was never an opportunity for either to have a childhood. Joe’s brother typically kept his distance from the rest of the family. It appears that he used this as a form of coping with the stresses that he endured from his family. This type of stressful, negative environment can greatly influence both the boy’s biological and societal systems. A lack of parent involvement can lead the boys down a dark, risk-taking path. For an adolescent, living in an economically depressed and high-crime area could have many more lasting effects due to the potential of influence from their environment. Environmental factors such as their relationship with their caregiver and social support within the home would determine how situations in their life are handled. According to the text, “Higher levels of social support are associated with greater responsiveness and adaptability of the parent to the child, more compliance with parental instructions, and lower incidence of child behavior problems.” (Lundahl & Hull, 2014, p.162)Adults living in economically depressed and high-crime areas are likely to do what is necessary to survive. Depending on the situation of the adult (single parent, drug use, alcohol use, etc.) could differ their cognitive influences. Another main factor would be the decisions that the adults choose to make in their daily life. Choosing to commit a crime or get a job to make money would be a considerably real decision for some. According to the text, “Motivation for more prosocial behaviors derives from a variety of factors but it can be inhibited by experiencing personal distress.” (Lundahl & Hull, 2014, p.166)ReferencesLundahl, B. W., & Hull, G. H., Jr. (2014). Applied human behavior in the social environment. Boston, MA: Pearson.

Response post – Respond to a fellow learner who either identified a cognitive factor that you missed, or whose answers to either of the other two questions differed from your own.

In the first case, discuss your response: Is that cognitive factor actually at play? If so, why do you think you missed it? If not, support your explanation with examples from the text or the movie itself.

In the second case, discuss the differences: What might be influencing the difference in ? Support your answer as above.
