Directions: Imagine that we are putting together an of Political Philosophy. Your task in this midterm examination is to write encyclopedia entries for any two of the five thinkers listed below. Each entry should be between 2 and 2.5 pages in length. Accordingly, the exam must be between 4 and 5 pages in total, excluding any works cited page. When composing your entries, write for an educated but general audience that is not necessarily familiar with the thinkers under discussion. A well-rounded encyclopedia entry will include background information about the thinker along with discussions of their most important ideas and contributions to political philosophy. It will reflect a thorough understanding of the thinker in question, which synthesizes course readings, lectures, and discussions. After reading your entry, an educated but previously ignorant reader should walk away with a clear, solid understanding of the thinker and his importance. While you do not need to consult outside sources, you do need to engage with course readings. Please make sure that each entry includes/engages with at least two direct quotations from our readings. If you only cite passages from our textbook, in-text parenthetical citations with a page number is sufficient: (Author, page number). If you cite from other editions of our readings, or consult any outside sources, please reference them and include a full works cited page your preferred format: Chicago, MLA, etc.

Formatting Guidelines: • Use a 12-point times new roman font. 1” margins. Include page numbers. • Make sure the document is double spaced. Remove extra space between paragraphs. • Before each entry, simply include your selected thinker’s name as its title. • Make sure each entry is between 2 and 2.5 pages and that the exam is between 4 and 5 pages, total. I will encourage your TA to stop reading at the end of the 5th page.

Grading Criteria: A-papers will include two well-rounded entries, each of which addresses one thinker from the list provided. They will interpret those thinkers correctly, making use of the text to support key ideas. Supporting quotations will be well selected and thoroughly explained. These papers will be extraordinarily well written, compelling, and organized. They will show that you’ve been coming to class and doing the readings. Likewise, they will demonstrate excellence by going beyond what we’ve discussed in class (referencing parts of the readings we didn’t discuss, providing original insights, etc.). They will be expertly copy edited and proofread to the extent that they could be published with minimal revisions. They will follow all of the directions and formatting guidelines included above.
