Much of the time, we are the only providers who can make connections between client needs and available resources. Although we can point clients to resources, that’s just not the same as advocating for them. As clinicians, you have more power than your clients. For example, I have a patient who was told his 1st appointment to consult with an oncologist about the lump he found on his cheek is January 15th, whcih was 3 weeks away. I didn’t think that was reasonable. I called the scheduling department and asked if the patient could be seen earlier. He was given an appointment for next week. I’ve called schools, DCF, employers, etc. on behalf on clients many times and I have consistently gotten better results than the clients have. We also have contact information that clients don’t always had. It takes time, but I recommend using your special gifts, knowledge, education, credentials, and positions to advocate for clients.
