I had been seeing clients through Teledoc (a video based mental health platform). I had a couple I was working with- I would see the husband on life related issues and I was working with the wife on her cancer journey. During a session with the wife, she admitted to sitting closely behind the door while I was working with the husband so she could hear what was happening in the session.
I never had that happen before- but due to the sessions being online, I could not control the environment that the client was in, and I couldn’t protect his privacy. Normally, when in sessions face to face, I would have the client in my office with a noise machine outside the door to prevent anyone from hearing what was being said in the counseling session.
This is something to keep in mind when providing telehealth services. You cannot guarantee their privacy and you advise them to ensure privacy on their end.
