It is relevant to examine teaching and learning from a historical perspective. We get the chance to analyze what worked in the past and how we can improve upon strategies, theories, activities, and lessons of old. It’s not that the basic elements of teaching and learning have changed–it’s about how the advancements have made teaching and learning more efficient. History gives us a glimpse of how others built a foundation upon which we have continued to build. We are influenced by the traditions, cultural norms, and philosophy from the past. When we acknowledge these, we are able to make sound decisions for present situations.
History provides a variety of purposes that can be lessons for today’s leaders in education. It has a formation purpose. Humility is one of those characteristics that comes to the forefront. We can be humbled by the little people used in times past to create environments for thinkers and developers to flourish. Looking at teaching and learning from a historical perspective causes us to be self-critical because it makes us come face to face with other options, evaluating our previous moves and decisions. History helps us understand what people, institutions, and society expectations were and gives us the ability to trace the things we know now back to its original source. History serves a purpose to help expand our view beyond what we see in the current moment (Setran, 2014).
