Hello class,

Unit 1- Discussion

I see myself applying knowledge from this course in my every day and in numerous ways. First example; how statistics are used in nursing-are patients with diabetes. Nurses are checking blood glucose on diabetic patients daily or sometimes more frequently( 3 or 4 times a day). Having numbers of their blood glucose level-l helps to identify if treatment is right for the patient. For example some patient have sliding scale- which tells the nurses how much insulin has to be administered. Statistics help to monitor the pattern of their numbers and identify what is the reason that levels are within normal limits and occasionally are very high or very low. In that case doctor must be notified and majority of time doctors ask for the whole history of all sugars levels from last 3 months, to established how insulin is given and what are the averages. This helps to find the best treatment for the patients.
Another example in my nursing field is; daily, weekly or monthly checking the weight of the patients. This is very important for nurses and doctors to know. Looking back at the pattern- telling us if patients have the right diet, or if they consume too much calories or not enough and protein supplement have to be prescribed by provider. All the number are very important for the patients who are weigh daily. People who are on diuretics with heart problems, are weigh often to establish right dose of medication. Not enough medication will cause the patient to retain water in the body and cause breathing problem, and swelling in lower extremities.
Furthermore, statistics are very important in nursing field , and help nurses all over the world to perform their job correctly.
